The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) will no longer be issuing paper copies of the Radioactive Materials Licenses effective February 1, 2023. They announced this decision after a federal review/audit of the license issuing process identified possible security gaps including the ability to falsify documents using information that was available on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and various state websites.
As a result, the NJDEP will now only issue licenses via an encrypted email in an effort to make document control and management more secure. In addition, the NJDEP is asking all license holders to be conscious of who has access to their licenses.
The goal of the new licensing procedure is to ensure that license documents are kept secure and out of public view, while still allowing access to employees that work with radioactive materials.
