Bromopropane Reporting Requirements for the Community Right to Know Survey and Pollution Prevention

A new advisory has been released regarding the reporting of bromopropane on the Community Right to Know Survey and the Release and Pollution Prevention Report in 2017. This addition affects all facilities in New Jersey subject to the two programs. The DEP is issuing this advisory as a result of the USEPA addition of bromopropane to the Toxic Release Inventory in November of 2015.

Included in a National Toxicology Program’s report on carcinogens as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen”, Bromopropane is an organobromide compound that’s used as a solvent for adhesives, degreasing plastics and optics. It helps produce asphalt, aerosols, and synthetic fibers and also is a cleaning chemical for metal surfaces, electronic circuit boards, Organic Light Emitting Diodes and as a dry cleaning solvent.

To ensure that your facility is prepared for the required reporting in the coming years, companies should begin to record the use of bromopropane. If bromopropane is onsite at New Jersey facilities, those companies will be subject to reporting on the Community Right to Know Survey and the Release and Pollution Prevention Report in 2017 for the 2016 calendar year.
