NJPhAST & Baron Outreach within Pharmaceutical, Life Sciences, and Other Product Manufacturing

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

Baron Environmental's President and CEO, Brian Long PE, joined the last two virtual GoToMeetings for the New Jersey Pharmaceutical Association for Science and Technology (NJPhAST) that were held on 9/17/20 and 10/15/20. The mission of NJPhAST, formerly the NJ Pharmaceutical Discussion Group, is to provide a forum for discussion, continuing education and the exchange of ideas on advances in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technology. NJPhAST is northern-NJ based, and has monthly meetings September through May.

Our involvement with the NJPhAST non-profit organization aligns with our company's ongoing outreach "to remove the overload of burdensome environmental and health & safety regulations for Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Life Sciences, Cosmetics, Flavor & Fragrance and other product manufacturers".

The September 17, 2020 presenter, Dr. Alaz S. Hussain, Ph.D. spoke on "Managing Pharmaceutical Quality: In And Beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic".  Dr. Hussain touched on many topics including the supply of pharmaceuticals, re-shoring traditional know-how and technologies, the nocebo cycle and options for "One Quality Voice".

The October 15, 2020 presenter, Dr. Cassandra Taylor, Ph.D. spoke on "FDA’s Role in Regulation of Cannabis Products". Dr. Taylor presented insight into the Federal Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act (FD&C), regulations and guidance. With limitations under the Act, the FDA has drug authority on any product, including cannabis product (hemp or otherwise), that is "marketed with a claim of therapeutic benefit, or with any other disease claim", since it is considered a drug. Accordingly, any new drug must be approved by the FDA for its intended use before it may be introduced into interstate commerce. Dr. Taylor also touched on the the FDA's internal agency working groups, the Marijuana Working Group and the CBD Working Group, ongoing support of scientific testing and research, regulatory pathways for lawful marketing, quality considerations, and the commitment to protect and promote public health.

There will be no meeting in November. The December 3, 2020 meeting is currently scheduled for in-person attendance at the Seasons Restaurant in Washington Township, NJ.
