In Pharma, Biopharma, Therapeutics, and CDMO environments, your safety protocols alone won’t protect you from EHS risks.
Customization is key.
In our work with pharma, biosciences, therapeutics, and CDMO operations, we’ve seen how relying on generic safety measures can lead to unintended risks.
One client, a therapeutic biotechnology company developing an oral therapy for infections, realized that their standard protocols weren’t enough.
After conducting an exposure risk assessment, they discovered their fume hood's ventilation system wasn’t sufficient for some of the raw materials. For higher-risk substances, they added double gloves and respirators, but for less volatile compounds, basic PPE and improved ventilation were enough.
Here are more practical tips and examples of how customization made a critical difference:
Handling Hazardous Substances:
Tip: Don’t rely solely on standard PPE requirements – conduct periodic exposure risk assessments that factor in volatility, toxicity, and exposure potential of each substance. For example, volatile compounds may require more than just engineering controls, such as industrial hygiene air monitoring or specialized filtration systems.
Waste Management:
Decontamination and disposal protocols are another area where customization is essential.
A CDMO company revisited their waste disposal procedures and found that certain rinse waters required hazardous waste treatment, preventing further scrutiny and violations from the local sewerage authority.
Training:
Training must go beyond compliance checklists.
At one R&D facility, where new equipment is regularly introduced due to their varied contract work, a hands-on training program focused on adapting to the constant changes in machines and processes. This helped ensure that staff remained proficient in handling biological samples and were able to quickly familiarize themselves with new equipment, maintaining consistency and safety across daily operations.
– IN SUMMARY –
Customizing these critical areas allows businesses to stay ahead of EHS risks, maintaining safety, compliance, and operational efficiency.
Safety protocols are just the starting point – real success lies in tailoring your approach to fit the specific challenges of your environment.
