EHS Myth # 1 (The One-Person Model):
In manufacturing, many believe compliance and culture are secured by hiring an in-house EHS manager.
I’d argue it often works out the opposite way.
Here’s why.
An in-house EHS manager, no matter how skilled, is just one person. Regulations change constantly, audits come without warning, and programs span across air emissions, hazardous waste, safety culture, reporting, and more. No single individual can stay ahead of it all.
That’s why we often see managers scrambling at the last minute, reacting to gaps they didn’t know existed. In many cases, it’s not lack of effort. It’s simply the wrong model for today’s complexity.
And then there’s the endless cycle every GM knows too well.
EHS managers leave or sometimes just aren’t very effective. Every time that happens, the responsibility lands back on the site leader—usually the GM. What should be a compliance system becomes a constant revolving door that drains time and focus from running the operation.
Dependency is too heavy on one point of failure.
The alternative? An outsourced, team-based, subscription approach where multiple subject matter experts stay engaged year-round. Instead of relying on a single person, you get a proactive system that adapts with your business.
Do you feel your one-person EHS model provides full coverage? That’s the myth more manufacturing leaders are beginning to recognize.
Cheers!
Brian
